Completed Concrete Renovations Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum - The Conco Companies -

The Conco Companies recently completed all structural concrete renovations for the LA Memorial Coliseum Renovation Project. Conco’s services included finishing, formwork, pumping, and shotcrete.

The Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum underwent the largest renovation in its 100-year history. Newly named, United Airlines Field at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, the $315 million makeover will host the University of Southern California (USC) Trojans, LA Rams football teams and prepare for the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles.

The Conco Companies placed approximately 24,000 cubic yards of concrete, including mat foundations, slab over metal decks, structural decks, shotcrete and new concrete seating in a large portion of the stadium bowl.

The whole north and south concrete seating bowl was replaced in order to add wider seats, more legroom, and extra aisles. Additionally, an eight-story structure was built to house new press boxes and luxury suites. A specially designed concrete mix was poured to protect reinforcing. This was necessary due to the concrete exposure to the environment. Concrete Admixtures were used for corrosion inhibitors and waterproofing.

Like every high-profile project, the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum presented its own challenges.  Conco’s planning and execution skills were tested by some of these challenges, such as:

  • Swiftly installing high quality, unique formwork systems with tight radius and slope seating.
  • Rigorous schedules to perform the work without impacting the 2018-2019 football season of both USC Trojans and LA Rams.

The Conco Companies was selected based on our vast stadium experience and multiple concrete services. Conco successfully completed the job on schedule and meeting the client’s expectations.

Epic Tower Project Update - The Conco Companies

The Conco Companies topped off the new mid-rise Epic Tower in February 2019. Conco provided all cast-in-place concrete services, including finishing, formwork, pumping and shotcrete.

Developed by Hudson Pacific Properties and designed Gensler Architects and Nabih Yousef and Associates, the project, under Hathaway Dinwiddie features a 14-story tower with 300,000 square feet of office space, 18,400 square feet of new retail space, and 5 levels of structured parking. The $150 million-dollar development will be an expansion to the Sunset Bronson Studios Complex directly across the street.

The unique building includes terraces at every level with modern appearance landscapes, providing a seamless transition to outside workspaces through tall glass walls that overlook the city of Los Angeles. Office space features new 15-foot lower profile ceilings with open floorplans.

The project started in December 2017 and presented logistic challenges due to its location, high volume of traffic, and limited site access.  Epic Tower took nearly 43,000 cubic yards (cy) of concrete to be completed. A total of 11,000 cy was poured on footings and 12-foot mat slabs surrounding the concrete core. The methods used to place mass concrete had to be taken into consideration with thermal control plans.  Vertical elements on the structure such as columns and the concrete core tower required a 7,000 PSI and a high modulus of elasticity (MOE).

To overcome these challenges, Catalina Pacific provided a mix design using Orca rock and provided a mix that would reach nearly 9,000 PSI at 56 days.  The concrete decks which comprised 50% of the overall yardage of the project, also had high requirements on MOE and Orca rock with a 6,000 PSI requirement. Additional challenges included a 10-foot cantilever deck, which was completed successfully by our formwork team.

Conco was selected for this project because of our experience and commitment to high-quality planning and execution on complex projects.

Boren Tower - The Conco Companies - Seattle Concrete Contractors 4 (1)

Boren Avenue is known for the cultural and pedestrian experience that it brings to Seattle residents and visitors. It is home to Cornish College’s famed Raisbeck Hall on Boren, among other notable historic sites. The challenge for Holland Residential and The Conco Companies, was to design and build a structure that reflects Seattle’s modern skyline without jarring the existing buildings. The result was a design that everyone can agree on.

Holland Residential’s new project, Boren Tower, is underway after receiving unanimous approval of their latest design. The tower replaces three surface-level parking lots totaling 21,600 square feet on the corner of Lenora Street and Boren Avenue. Designed by the Seattle architectural firm, Weber Thompson, the 44-story mixed-use tower will accommodate residential, arts, and office spaces at 2019 Boren Avenue. It also offers below-grade parking for over 360 vehicles.

Residential amenities include both outdoor and indoor space on level 5, atop the tower’s roof, and on the podium level. The south terrace provides a pool deck, cooking/hospitality area, and a full, wrap-around bar. Although floor plans and per-unit square footage are still in the works, upper floors will contain 400 residential units, with four penthouses on level 42 and 43. The entire project will total 643,000 square feet.

The Conco Companies poured a mat slab in January 2020, consisting of a monolithic base mat pour of 5,920cy. with an additional upper mat slab pour of 730cy.  The crew utilized three pumps to pour the concrete. Cadman supplied the readymix, averaging 348 yards per hour for the pour, with a maximum output of 463cy per hour. Conco Reinforcing supplied over 1.5 million pounds of rebar for the mat, installed by RPM.

The Conco Companies is partnering with Holland Residential throughout the planning and execution phases of the project due to our solid working relationship, reliable services, and competitive bids. This is our fourth tower project with Holland. The scope of the work will include concrete pumping, finishing, reinforcement, formwork, trucking, and shotcrete. The project is expected to be completed by August 2021.

The Conco Companies provides comprehensive concrete services throughout the Western United States. We provide expertise and unsurpassed quality to each project regardless of its size or scope.  We continue to upgrade and expand facilities to better serve the growing market for public works projects, commercial, educational, parking structures, and other construction development.  Allow us to show you how we can assist your next project with our extensive experience and first-rate Denver concrete services.
