In late April 2021, Conco Companies poured a mat foundation for the 1000 Virginia project, a 45-story mixed use tower. This tower was developed by NASH – Holland Boren & Virginia Investors and is using Conco’s concrete services for pumping, formwork, reinforcement, among others.

This project’s challenges include its location in a tight, downtown area adjacent to a school. Conco is no stranger to navigating difficult construction sites, and has often been selected for our experience in getting our teams inside to do the job. We won this project after making a competitive bid and project schedule that is proven possible by our past projects across the Western U.S.

When completed, 1000 Virginia will include 454 residential units and 1,000 sf of retail space. It will also include 6 levels of underground and 3 levels of aboveground parking to accommodate 242 vehicles and 397 bicycles. Conco is on track to complete our portion of the job in October 2022, making this our 4th 40+ story tower with Holland Construction, Inc. and 6th 40+ story tower to grace Seattle’s skyline.

Conco is one of the foremost suppliers of concrete services for the Western U.S. We started in 1959 in the San Francisco Bay Area by offering clients the best value on a broad range of concrete services and products. Conco is now the leading commercial concrete contractor in the region. We have regional offices serving California, Oregon, and Washington.

A building’s design and architectural style will leave an impact for years to come.

Poorly designed architecture will cheapen the look and feel of a neighborhood, while a thoughtfully constructed building can accentuate the surrounding architecture. The latter will be the case for 2072 Addison, a new mixed-use building in the Berkeley Arts district that is developed by Ruegg & Ellsworth, designed by Kirk Peterson Associates (KPA), and constructed by ECS Corp and Conco.

Addison - Conco Pump

2072 Addison pays respect to Berkeley’s timeless character.

As developers who were born in Berkeley, Dave Ruegg and Bob Ellsworth wanted 2072 Addison to respect their hometown with a historical design. Through their business, Ruegg & Ellsworth, they shared their vision with architects Kirk Peterson and Mike Tracy at KPA. Once the design was finalized, ECS was brought in as the general contractor, who in turn approached Conco to build the structure with a cost-efficient design-build approach. Conco then contracted Hoogerwerf & Associates to develop the structural plans.

KPA chose a concrete façade for its versatility and design flexibility. Using concrete as a medium, ECS contracted Conco to build the formwork, and pump and place the concrete. Conco used a combination of casting concrete in place and using shotcrete, a type of concrete that is sprayed onto walls at high velocity. The result is a beautiful exterior with a mix of Roman features and delicate and chunky elements that befit any structure in the Arts district. It’s no wonder that the Berkeley city planners embraced the design.

Construction is a feat of skill and collaboration.

Building great structures takes a combination of vision, design, and execution that can only be accomplished with a skilled owner, architect, and structural engineer. Together, they transform their visions into working designs for the general contractor and subcontractors, like Conco, to execute. Conco is proud to have played a part in creating the finished product, and are thankful to work with a fantastic team.

10) Angelo Tower Complete

In May 2020, The Conco Companies topped out Angelo Tower, which is part of a project that produced multiple low-income housing units in the Vancouver community. Also contributing to the project were Robertson & Olsen Construction, Wilson Architects PLLC, and KGA Consulting Engineers.

Conco was selected to contribute to the concrete portion of the project because of our expertise in:

  • Concrete pumping
  • Horizontal elevated-deck formwork
  • Vertical cast-in-place formwork
  • Engineering
  • Detailing
  • Reinforcing supply & fabrication
  • Trucking

The project scope included pouring Slab on Grade (SOG), three elevated decks, and three elevated Slab on Metal Decks (SOMDs). This totaled to a project size of 150,000 SF. The challenges of this project included pouring multiple mat foundations, and placing round architectural columns for a high-end appearance.

Conco began the project in November 2019 and adjusted our process accordingly to COVID-19 guidelines. The Angelo Project is one of the first projects we worked on during the pandemic, and one of many that will be completed quickly and safely.

400 University 1 - Conco

In November 2020, The Conco Companies completed its concrete services for 400 University @ Rainier Square, a 10-story office building in downtown Seattle. We were selected based on our experience with similar tower structures in the Seattle market. This building, which was developed by Wright Runstad & Company, required full concrete services ranging from concrete pumping to concrete reinforcement.

This project’s challenges included its proximity to two active construction sites, each with different general contractors. Additional challenges included coordinating our shoring/re-shoring systems, deliveries, safe personnel egress, and COVID checkpoints with the operations of adjacent projects. Conco cooperated with the general contractors to ensure their projects were completed safely and efficiently.

400 University @ Rainier Square provides more than office space; it offers retail shopping opportunities at street level. Overall, it has a footprint of 17,400 SF that slims to 9,250 SF at the tower levels, and 106,000 SF of elevated deck. It’s also part of the larger Rainier Project, which creates a trio of structures that include Seattle’s 2nd tallest building.

Conco is proud to have contributed to a high-profile milestone in the life of Seattle’s skyline, and will continue to help develop the Seattle area.

9) Vancouver center complete

From June 2019 to November 2019, The Conco Companies helped build the Vancouver Center, a 26,500 SF mixed-use apartment complex in downtown Vancouver. The developer was Holland Partner Group, with KPFF Consulting Engineers in charge of structural engineering and Ankrom Moisan Architects in charge of the architecture. Conco provided the following services: concrete pumping, reinforcement, formwork, construction trucking, and shotcrete.

The Vancouver Center is a LEED certified, retrofit podium-type structure that’s a continuation of an existing elevated-deck parking structure. Conco was tasked with adding another elevated deck and retro-fitting the existing deck.

Additionally, Conco was tasked with keeping the parking structure open for use during construction. This was one of the most difficult parts of the project, but thanks to our engineers, we were able to cast the elevated deck above and keep the parking structure open.

The Vancouver Center is now open and offering apartment units to Vancouver residents. Conco is proud to have aided the development of this quickly growing downtown community.
