The Conco Companies recently embarked on another challenging project in Southern CA.  This time we are providing a full range of concrete services for the Midfield Satellite Concourse North and the Baggage Optimization Project (BOP) that are part of a new addition to LAX’s Tom Bradley International Terminal (TBIT).

When complete, the Concourse will offer 12 new aircraft gates as well as restrooms, retail and concession spaces and will be connected to the TBIT by a 1,000-foot-long pedestrian tunnel with moving walkways and a utility tunnel.  The project also includes 1.5 million square feet of new aircraft apron and taxiways/taxilanes along with underground utility improvements to support the new gates and baggage processing capacity.

The $1.6 billion project is funded by LAX operating revenues, fees and other proceeds.  The General Contractor, Turner/PCL Joint Venture, was awarded the design/build contract.   It is also designed by Corgan Architects in association with Gensler and gkkworks.  Structural engineers are Saiful-Bouquet and Buehler & Buehler.

The scope of Conco’s responsibilities for the new five-level Concourse and BOP includes concrete pumping, reinforcement, and formwork.  In addition we will provide the project’s outlying areas with concrete reinforcement, formwork and shotcrete services.  On the extensive tunnels, our crews will expertly handle the concrete finishing.  During the course of the project, Conco will also offer design assistance to help ensure the best finished product.

As the large work area encompasses 640-acres, some of it is on or adjacent to active runways and other occupied areas.  Couple that with varying soil conditions, obvious security concerns, traffic, work time restrictions, concerns for local residents, and adhering to our number one priority – safety; it is a challenging project! Just like any design/build, a lot of coordination is needed among all trade partners, and we are excited to be part of such a great team.  Also most design/build projects require lots of modifications and this project looks to be no different.

Conco is honored to be a part of a project that along with other planned improvements to the airport will have a dramatic impact on LAX and the 74 million travelers that pass through the facility each year.  The Midfield Satellite Concourse terminal is expected to achieve LEED Silver certification and to meet the CAL Green Tier 1 requirements with sustainable features such as a “cool roof,” water-saving fixtures, and energy-saving operations.  The project broke ground February 27, 2017 and is scheduled for completion sometime in 2019.

The Conco Companies is a leading supplier of concrete services throughout the Western U.S.  We started in the Bay Area in 1959 by offering clients the best value on a wide range of concrete services and products and are now one of the foremost concrete contractors in the region. Our concrete services include commercial, educational, industrial and public works projects as well as parking structures.

The LA Business Journal‘s Commercial Real Estate Awards recently recognized two of The Conco Companies projects as “Gold Winners” in the categories for Best Sustainable Project and Best Multi-family Project. The entire Conco team is proud to have had the opportunity to provide high-quality concrete services for these smartly designed, award-winning projects.

Both of the distinguished projects are prime examples of our industry’s commitment to sustainability and will serve our communities for many years to come. We wish to congratulate the projects’ owners and developers, architects, and general contractors on the awards. Additionally Conco extends a special thanks to Swinerton Builders, Clark Construction, Skidmore, Owings & Merrill LLP, and Handel Architects who made these projects possible and for selecting Conco to provide concrete services for these projects.

Gold Winner: Best Sustainable Project

Federal Court House Project - Gold Award

The LA Federal Courthouse won the Gold Award in the category for Best Sustainable Project. Referred to as “The Cube,” the 11-story, 631,000 sq. ft. courthouse was designed and built to earn LEED Platinum certification. The new building is equipped with high efficiency systems including a 1,200-ton central utility plant with a 130-ton heat recovery chiller and a 250 KW roof-mounted photovoltaic array of solar panels. In addition the courthouse features a large skylight that offers natural light and exterior “pleats” to maximize daylight penetration and minimize solar thermal gains.

Gold Winner: Best Multi-family Project

Ten Thousand Project - Gold Award

The Ten Thousand Apartment Tower won the Gold Award for the Best Multi-family Project. The 40-story, luxury residential tower has already become an iconic architectural landmark in the L.A. skyline with its uniquely angled rooftop and angular, glass sheathed façade. Composed of four crystalline quadrants, the façade’s multiple panes of glass are slightly angled away from one another to refract sunlight during the day and transform the tower into an illuminated beacon at night. The tower received LEED Gold certification and offers an on-site garage and 75,000 sq. ft. of indoor and outdoor amenities.

We are honored to be recipients of the LA Business Journal‘s Commercial Real Estate Awards and wholeheartedly thank the construction community for the continuous support and trust they have placed in The Conco Companies. Finally we wish to congratulate our LA Federal Courthouse and Ten Thousand Apartment Tower teams for their hard work and commitment to these projects. These awards are for all of you – Great job!

Conco’s mission is to be the best supplier of concrete services in the Western United States and to bring expertise, experience and quality to each project. We continue to upgrade and expand facilities to better serve the growing market for public works projects, commercial, parking structures, educational, and other construction development.

The floating Cube

The project, also called by the Angelinos “The floating Cube” was designed to address the federal government’s blast and set-back requirements, which gives it its unique cantilevered look. We would like to thank our partners at Clark Construction and Skidmore, Owings & Merrill design group for their forward thinking on design, innovation, and coordination needed on this new Los Angeles landmark.

Stay Tuned as the project competes at the 2017 ACI National Convention!

On Monday, February 29, 2016, the Conco Companies topped off the core of the Wilshire Grand Center building in downtown Los Angeles.  With over 150,000 cubic yards of concrete poured, and an intensely dedicated crew peaking to over 160 men and women on site, the Conco team has finally reached the milestone to lead the way for the interior finishes.

Wilshire Grand - Commercial Concrete Contractors Conco
Once completed, the Wilshire Grand project will be the tallest building west of the Mississippi at a height of 1,099 feet. It will surpass the U.S Bank building, also in downtown Los Angeles, by 81 feet.

The Conco Companies is supplying the entire cast-in-place concrete for this project. This includes:

  • Record breaking mat foundation of 21,200 cubic yards in a single pour
  • High strength concrete found inside the core walls
  • Lightweight deck fill concrete on all floors
  • Structural deck concrete, below grade walls and columns
  • Shotcrete perimeter walls

Conco deployed the most powerful concrete stationary pumps in the industry. The primary pump was Conco’s electric powered 14000E pump whose primary benefits are its low carbon footprint and low noise generation. These two significant benefits were crucial in topping off the core, as the pumps were positioned less than 40 feet from an occupied Class A office building. Conco’s 14000E pump is the only one of its kind on the west coast.

Pumping for this project has been trouble-free, allowing us to push both hard rock and lightweight concrete to the top of the structure with power to spare. The 14000E pump has allowed us to move concrete nearly 1,100 feet vertically, and 400 feet horizontally bringing the total pumping distance to nearly 1,500 feet.

Conco has two pumps and supply lines on site to address any unforeseen issues that may arise. The work has been fast-paced with no room for error. The safety of our employees as well as public safety has been our number one priority, and we are proud to announce that the project was a success for both our client and Conco.

The Conco Companies is thankful for a team of dedicated, hard working employees and a great partner, Turner Construction Company. It is with their support and collaborative efforts, that we were able to accomplish this extraordinary feat.
