In an incredible schedule of 14 mat pours in 9 weeks that were all turn key projects for Conco, one week especially stood out. September 24th through October 1, 2022, brought Conco four mat pours in one week. It started with the Tasman East Apartments, then Dwight & Milvia and The Station jobs. We finished up the week at the 24th & Waverly project. These projects are all turn-key projects for Conco. In addition to concrete pumping, we are providing the rebar, place and finish work, formworks, and shotcrete.

Conco poured 13,794 yards of concrete at these four mat pours in that week alone. We averaged 450 yards poured per hour for most of the pours.  Each jobsite is unique in its challenges and our teams impressed not only us, but the General Contractors, the City’s, and the other trades on the jobs with their diligence and advanced planning. We not only got the job done, but got it done as safely as possible.

Our Reinforcing services set the stage for each of these successful pours. Conco Reinforcing delivered 100 loads of rebar, totaling 4,000,000 pounds for the combined four pours for that week alone. This was all made possible with the contribution from Conco’s state of the art rebar fabrication facility in Benicia, CA. The detailers and project engineers at the office and the crew at our rebar facility tirelessly to get the rebar ready for each of these jobs.

It was a good week, and these pours were injury free thanks to the hard work of our Safety team and the Conco employee’s commitment to safety on the jobsite. Conco strives to provide its customers with not just the best option but the easiest one. We truly strive to be a one stop shop for our customers and passionately provide a service that has created strong relationships over our 60 years in the industry. With one phone call you can take care of it all.

Lamp Lodge

The Conco Companies has reached the first milestone in the Lamp Lodge project, an 82-unit affordable housing community in downtown Los Angeles that will replace an existing Single-Room Occupancy building. Conco is providing concrete services including concrete pumping, formwork, shotcrete, place and finish, rebar, and excavation.

Lamp Lodge will be a 7-story building with a community room, laundry facility, second-floor courtyard, garden, and 16 parking spaces. Of the 82 units, one will be a manager’s apartment, and the rest will house homeless, special needs, and low-income residents. The 81 residential units will be priced for residents making only 30-35% of the area’s median income.

Lamp Lodge is designed by KFA Architecture and developed by Meta Housing Corporation, which specializes in affordable, mixed-income apartments and complexes, and public-funded projects that promote job opportunities to residents.

Conco was selected as the concrete services provider because the Lamp Lodge project requires fast-paced construction, and has a small footprint jobsite that requires precise logistics. The project utilizes over 2,500 cubic-yards of poured concrete for 22,000 square-feet of structural decks. Construction is expected to be completed by the first quarter of 2022, and is one of several affordable housing projects Conco is proud to help build.

The Conco Companies has completed its concrete services to convert 8899 Beverly Blvd, a former 10-story office building located near Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, into a building with 40 luxury condo units and two high-end penthouses on the upper floors. The project was designed by Olsen Kundig Architects, managed by Pankow, and developed by Townscape Partners.

Conco’s portion of the project consisted of a major structural retrofit and additions to the building. The retrofit included enhancement of existing shear walls, columns, and beams from the basement up the 8th floor. The building additions were interior column enhancements and 24”-thick shear walls.

Conco crews worked long hours for 8 months to successfully shotcrete 3,700 cubic yards in extreme reinforced conditions, and pump 18,000 cubic yards for the structural concrete work needed by our long-standing client. The project logistics were another challenge that Conco crews were able to effectively coordinate under a high-pace schedule.

8899 Beverly is nearing completion, with Conco’s partners putting the final touches on the building. The Conco Companies is proud to have worked with its partners on this remarkable project.

Hillhurst

Since August 2020, The Conco Companies has been providing full concrete services for the new Cedar Sinai Medical Center on Hillhurst Avenue, in the Los Feliz neighborhood of Los Angeles. The services provided include shotcrete, concrete pumping, place and finish, rebar, and formwork.

When completed, the medical center will cover an 11,000 square-feet footprint, and introduce a 3-story building for a total of 51,000 square feet of covered area—with three levels below-grade parking.

This project’s build is accompanied by logistical struggles that Conco is equipped to overcome. In particular, there is only one-sided access to the project site, with an excavation that is over 35-feet deep. The roadside access is also beset with overhead utility and electrical lines, making the incorporation of concrete and other construction materials into the project a feat.

Conco and the general contractor, Pankow, strategized the work sequence for maximum effectiveness in a tiny footprint. Construction is expected to stay on course throughout the COVID-19 pandemic and be completed in May 2021.

The Conco Companies is in the Pre-Construction phase for Amani Apartments, a new apartment building that will be reserved for low- to very low-income households in Los Angeles. Conco will provide the affordable housing community a full range of structural concrete services, including pumping, excavation, formwork, shotcrete, and place and finish.

Developed by Wakeland Housing and managed by RD Olson Construction, the Amani Apartments is scheduled to finish construction by the second quarter of 2022. It will replace a vacant lot with a 5-story building of 54 affordable residential units. Conco will place over 1,000 cubic yards of concrete, with a total of 10,000 square feet of Slab-on-Grade, and a suspended deck.

Each residential unit will be a studio ranging from 393 to 424 square feet, with one unit being 875 square feet. The building features shotcrete columns and walls with board finish, and includes property management offices, community laundry facilities, a common room, an observation deck, and outdoor courtyards.

The new affordable housing community will be located near the historic Victoria Park, at Pico and Crenshaw Boulevards. It is part of Proposition HHH, a $1.2 Billion bond that provides help and housing to homeless and low income residents across Los Angeles, and is one of several Los Angeles affordable housing projects that have chosen Conco for concrete services.
