The Conco Companies is providing a full range of concrete and reinforcing services on the John Muir Walnut Creek Outpatient Specialty Center Project for John Muir Health.

The new ground-up construction will consist of 2 basement levels and 2 above ground levels totaling approximately 155,176 square feet.

It will connect to the reconstructed service building via an underground tunnel, which will be attached adjacent to the existing parking structure.

Conco was selected to perform a dome roof metal deck fill with shotcrete. The project required a unique application of approximately 6,000 cubic yards of shotcrete that had to be pumped over 300 feet. While Conco does not currently operate in Nevada, Conco was the only contractor that was able to provide solutions with a job-specific plan including pumping, shotcrete/place, and finish sequence, and access-egress to perform the scope of work.

MSG Sphere is the first of its kind. The building consists of a sphere-shaped amphitheater that will feature nearly 20,000 seats. The interior of the building will be completely wrapped with over 13,500 high-resolution LED screens. As the building itself, Conco provided a unique dome roof fill with shotcrete application. Conco coordinated manpower from all the regions to work together and complete such a complex project.

The first challenge that Conco had to face, was to provide a complete pumping plan to push over 6,000 cubic yards over 300 ft vertically plus another 100 feet horizontally at each pump system location. The plan included engineering, calculations of maximum pressure of the system, and the rate of yardage per hour required to meet the project expectations. A total of (3) complex pump systems were installed, utilizing high-pressure pumps at ground level that fed trailer pumps installed on the roof through hard pipes. Finally, a combination of pipes and rubber hoses were used from the upper pumps to place the whole dome.

The second challenge was to tailor and create shotcrete and cast-in-place mix design that can meet a specified 0.02% shrinkage requirement on the whole dome. Conco worked hand in hand with a local Ready-Mix Supplier (Silverstar Ready Mix) performing multiple trial batches, adjusting aggregates sources and multiple admixtures dosages until it was achieved.

The structural engineer required the dome to be placed in dome shape form starting from the crown of the dome. Every day the placement had to be completed around the whole circumference of the dome for the structure be able settled evenly with the added weight of the concrete. Conco planned a construction joint sequence with the following parameters:
▪ Being able to place a total circumference on a daily basis to meet the engineer’s requirement.
▪ Achieve an optimum rate of yardage per hour on daily basis with three crews running simultaneously at every pump location.
▪ Coordination with ready mix supplier on the concrete delivery rate.
▪ Complete the fill of the whole dome in 23 days or less as required on the project schedule.
▪ Conco had to fully coordinate every single step of the work with other trades to avoid project delays.
▪ Planned a scaffold system that was easy enough to be able to be moved on a daily basis but strong enough to support crews on a safely manner.
▪ Provided easy access-egress on areas of the dome that were up to 50-degree incline.

The partners that collaborated on the development of the Ilani Casino and resort announced during a press conference the formation of an investment group for expanding the facility to include a 14-story, 300-room hotel. The casino’s hotel will accommodate additional space for gaming.

As the development company, the Cowlitz Indian Tribe announced the casino will receive exterior and interior updates, as well as the opening of two new restaurants. The hotel project comes on the heels of the completion of a 2,500-seat meeting and entertainment center that competes with similar dual-purpose facilities located in greater Portland, Oregon.

After the hotel opens, along with the new restaurants and additional gaming space, the Ilani property will exceed 400,000 square feet. The gaming space alone covers more than 100,000 square feet, with 17 table games and 2,500 slot machines.

As an independent contractor, Conco Companies provides shotcrete, concrete formwork, concrete pumping, concrete trucking, and concrete reinforcement services for the Ilani Casino Hotel project. Our ability to work safely and efficiently on large-scale projects helped Conco Companies receive the contract for the concrete phase of the construction project. Conco Companies has developed a reputation for rapidly adapting to the changes made for fast-paced projects such as the Ilani Casino Hotel. We started on the project in July 2021, with an expected completion date to be sometime during April of 2022.

Mt-SAC-Student-Center-2.jpeg

The Conco Companies began construction on the new 100,000 SF Mt. San Antonio College (SAC) Student Center on December 10, 2020. The original center opened in 1953 on a much smaller campus and needs to be expanded and updated for Mt. SAC’s current needs. Conco is providing a multitude of concrete services including but not limited to formwork, shoring, pumping, and rebar fabrication. Working alongside Conco are the general contractor Tilden-Coil (CM), HPI Architecture, and MHP Structural Engineers.

Conco came out on top of a competitive bid process. Our approach varied drastically from that of CM. Our understanding of how to sequence the footings and tie the second-level elevated slabs into the slab on grade at level 2 were key factors in meeting an aggressive schedule. Since then we’ve proven our efforts, and have been requested for opinions on future projects that the CM is undertaking.

When open, the Mt. SAC Student Center will welcome students into an inclusive and comfortable environment that fosters student engagement. The first floor will have a convenience store and added study spots for individual students and groups. The second floor will feature a multi-cultural center, student club kitchen, and an updated room for Associated Student meetings. On all three floors will be event space and conference rooms.

Planned for substantial completion by December 22, 2021, Conco is excited to provide a much-needed space to support education and build a stronger future.

Santa-Rosa-Criminal-Courthouse-1.jpg

The new Santa Rosa Criminal Courthouse will use the following Conco services: concrete pumping, concrete reinforcement, concrete formwork, concrete finishing, shotcrete, and Confoam. The courthouse will be located on the Sonoma County Administration Campus on Ventura Avenue, north of downtown Santa Rosa, and on the cleared site where the Old Jail facility stood.

The courthouse will be 6 stories above ground and include a basement level. The lower 2 levels will contain courtrooms, general parking, and secured parking, with the upper 4 levels containing additional courtrooms and court administration offices. There will be 430 parking stalls available for daily operations within the courthouse, along with an additional 20 stalls for secured parking.

Conco is expecting to place 11,000 cubic yards total of concrete and shotcrete, and 1,900,000 pounds of reinforcing bar. Rudolph & Sletten are overseeing the complete building process, partnering with Richard Meier & Partners Architects, Englekirk Institutional engineers, and Conco commercial concrete services. Construction of the new courthouse began in June 2021, with anticipated completion in July 2023.
