Further changes to the mixture design can include fly ash, admixtures, and other materials.

Confoam™ Logo benefits include:

No Compaction Required

Self-compacting ConFoam™ eliminates the need for mechanical compaction and is also more consistent, while at the same time, having no impact on retaining structures or deep foundations. This makes it a great fit for swimming pool demolition.

Lightweight Concrete

ConFoam™ can be produced at a weight that is considerably less than compacted base materials or native soils, and thus eliminates the need for expensive foundation solutions.

Settlement Free Construction

ConFoam™ can be produced to make the combined weight of the new structure less than or equal to the weight of the removed soil, and virtually eliminates any settlement.

Safer placement

ConFoam™ offers a safer alternative to traditional methods of pipe abandonment backfill and utility trench and excavation backfill, as it eliminates the need to put employees in the excavation area.

Easily excavatable

Unlike other CLSM concrete mixes, ConFoam™ does not achieve unexpected strength gain, which means it is easy to excavate with common construction equipment, or in the case of some low strength mixes, just a shovel.

Fast & Effective

ConFoam™ can be quickly mobilized for emergency repairs. It requires less equipment and labor than traditional concrete, making it an ideal choice for timely responses. Workers can begin filling voids within an hour of arrival. ConFoam™ also reaches 100% consolidation sooner than traditional concrete due to its self-leveling and self-compacting characteristics. Unlike traditional backfill, ConFoam™ doesn’t settle, shrink, or have unexpected strength gain.

Annular Grout and Void Space Backfill

At The Conco Companies, we reduce costs and installation time by utilizing our proprietary foam concrete ConFoam™ for multiple applications, including annular grout and void space backfill. ConFoam™ is a cement-based slurry with a foaming agent that is highly flowable and doesn’t settle. It’s often referred to as “liquid backfill,” because it flows smoothly and completely fills voids.

A Customizable Solution

Conco adjusts the density of ConFoam™ for each application for optimal results. When used for annual grout backfill, ConFoam™ is produced at a lighter density to prevent the carrier pipe from floating. When produced as a void space backfill, the density is customized for compatibility with surrounding structures and soil conditions.

ConFoam™ also has low viscosity, which allows it to be pumped across thousands of feet to locations that otherwise couldn’t be reached by traditional backfill. Traditional backfill might require an expansion of the excavation site just to make room for equipment and workers, while ConFoam™ requires less accommodation. Workers also don’t need to be in excavation sites to install ConFoam™. They can simply use hundreds of feet of hose to pump ConFoam™ into out-of-reach voids that’d otherwise be problematic for traditional backfill.

Fast and Effective Emergency Relief

Conco produces our proprietary ConFoam™ to be quickly mobilized for emergency repairs.

Superior Alternative to Other Backfill Methods

ConFoam™ doesn’t have the drawbacks of other backfill methods. Backfilling with layers of aggregate base material requires intensive labor, and difficult compaction, and leaves you with a backfill that has a tendency to settle and be washed away. Another backfill material, which is concrete-based and called controlled density fill (CDF), doesn’t flow as well as ConFoam™ and can be difficult to excavate because it gains strength over time.

There are many other benefits to using ConFoam™ as annular grout and void space backfill, not limited to:

  • Proven Expertise – Conco teams are experienced at producing and placing ConFoam™.
  • ConFoam™ replaces the need for Expanded Polystyrene Geofoam Blocks
  • Self-Compaction – ConFoam™ doesn’t use mechanical compaction or compaction testing.
  • Cost-Effective – ConFoam™ reduces costs associated with transportation, equipment, and labor when compared to traditional backfill.
  • No Waste – ConFoam™ is produced on-site as it is needed. Production stops once the project is filled, reducing the carbon footprint.

What is ConFoam™?

ConFoam™ is a cellular concrete made from a mixture of cement, water, and preformed foam. It’s a highly flowable lightweight material most often used as a backfill or subbase replacement. Simply put, ConFoam™ is “liquid backfill.”

How does ConFoam™ differ from traditional concrete?

Unlike traditional concrete, ConFoam™ is highly flowable and nearly self-leveling, which requires little placement labor. Installation takes less time and uses less labor, material, transportation, and testing.

What are the benefits of ConFoam™?

ConFoam™has a lightweight composition that applies minimal pressure to existing structures but can achieve 100% consolidation without mechanical vibration. This reduces or eliminates the need to brace walls during backfill.

Its fluid nature makes it easy to pump and fill hard to reach voids, including underneath slabs and around pipes. Installation is easy enough that employees don’t need to stand in the excavation area during placement. It also doesn’t need compaction testing.

There is virtually no settlement with ConFoam™, but unlike traditional concrete and controlled low-strength material (CLSM) mixes, it is also easily excavatable should the need arise.

What can ConFoam™ be used for?

ConFoam™ can be customized for many applications, not limited to backfilling voids, filling abandoned pipes and tanks, “foam filling” trenches to reduce weight on pipes after settlement, and creating sub-bases for highways.

What is the density of ConFoam™?

The density of ConFoam™ varies based on its application, because it can be produced at multiple densities. Low-density ConFoam™ ranges from 20-50 pcf, while high-density ConFoam™ is 70 pcf and above.

Is ConFoam™ permeable?

ConFoam™ can be customized as water permeable with a pass-through rate comparable to sand. This particular customization is ConFoam™ Drain 27, which uses a porous foam to allow water to freely travel though.

ConFoam™ Drain 27 weighs 27 pcf when it’s dry and can almost hold its own weight in water. As a sub-base, this prevents water from popping up the surface layer.

How is ConFoam™ installed?

Installation is simple and quick. ConFoam™ equipment is easily mobilized to pump across long distances and elevations not accessible by traditional mobile equipment and field personnel.

Pumping can begin in less than an hour upon arrival at the site. 1,000 cubic yards can be pumped a day, and all compaction takes place without needing personnel in the excavation site.

Is ConFoam™ easy to excavate?

ConFoam™’s lightweight composition makes it easy to remove with a shovel, saw, or chainsaw.

Is ConFoam™ environmentally friendly?

The carbon footprint of ConFoam™ is far smaller than that of traditional concrete and has no impact on retaining structures or deep foundations. It’s produced as it’s pumped, making it impossible to have waste. Less equipment is required than with traditional concrete, so there is less equipment transport and traffic congestion. Additionally, ConFoam™ doesn’t settle overtime, so it doesn’t need to be reworked. The fill material can be easily recycled and reused.
