The Laguna Honda Hospital is one of the country’s largest skilled nursing and rehabilitation facilities located in San Francisco, CA serving seniors and adults with disabilities.  The facility specializes in providing individualized, patient-focused long-term care, rehabilitation, hospice, and Alzheimer’s and HIV/AIDs care for 765 residents in 13 programs.

Laguna Honda Hospital - San Francisco

The 150-year-old hospital was recently expanded and extensively renovated under a 10-year-long plan that constructed three new state-of-the-art buildings.  The large project consisted of 500,000 sq. ft. of new construction and 150,000 sq. ft. of renovations.  Care was taken to stay true to some of the historical components of the hospital and the surrounding community as well as retaining a natural environment on the 62-acre campus. Conco was brought in to provide concrete services for the new construction.

The healthcare facility was the first hospital in California to be awarded LEED Silver certification.  Construction manager was the Turner Construction Company and the architects were Anshen+Allen Architects and Gordon H Chong & Partners.  The engineer was   Rutherford & Chekene Consulting Engineers.

The state-of-the-art facility now offers a home-like atmosphere comprised of units in which 15 patients reside.  Each unit has a common living area where patients can socialize, and each floor is made up of 4 units that join together to form neighborhoods to create a community of sorts.  Given that the average stay at the facility is 17 months, it is essential for patience to have a comfortable environment.

The new Rehabilitation Center contains two therapy pools and two gymnasiums.  The Esplanade is an indoor style boulevard that offers services such as “a café, a community theatre, two art studios, a multi-media library with a fireplace, barber and beauty shops, a tropical bird aviary, and a cafeteria with indoor and outdoor seating.”*

Although San Jose, CA. is a largest city in the Bay Area, the Mineta San José International Airport is the smallest of the three airports in the area.  Both San Francisco and Oakland airports serve a far greater number of travelers than San Jose’s.

The tremendous growth in the area fueled by the development of Silicon Valley had meant the airport was long overdue for an expansion and renovation of the facilities.  The project was done in a series of stages over a period of almost ten years and is now finally complete.  Conco had the opportunity to provide concrete services on one of the largest phases of the project.  Our work was to help in the construction of the new Terminal B.  The complete scope of work for the airport included upgrades and modernization to Terminal A and improvements on parking and roads as well as the new car rental facility, ConRAC.

Terminal B officially opened for business on June, 2010 and the airport is now considered to be one of the most technologically advanced airports in the country.  The terminal received LEED Silver certification for the environmentally sustainable design and construction. According to the airport’s website, the design optimizes an “energy performance exceeding California Title 24 standards by 16%.”

With the increased activity in the construction market, our Concrete Pumping division recently purchased three brand new Schwing 58X concrete pumps.  The 58 meter pumps were the first of their size to be shipped to California or Washington in the last 5 years.  They are the only long boom pumps in the area with engines that meet the latest emission standards.

Long Boom Concrete Pumps   1650 Wewatta 0002

So what exactly is a long boom pump and how does it work?  A concrete pump is attached (mounted) to a truck and uses a remote controlled, articulating robotic arm known as the boom.  It has the ability to place concrete quicker and more precisely than traditional methods.  There are some pumps that can deliver over 200 cubic yards of concrete per hour, which one of the reasons it is economical.  With the long reach of the pumps, it also eliminates much of the need to construct walkways and access points into certain areas of a project.

Here are some remarkable statistics regarding the capability of the 58 meter pump.  According to the Schwing website, the pump has a vertical reach of 187’ 9”, a horizontal reach of 175’ 1”, and a below grade reach of 141’ 1”.  It has a boom rotation of 370 degrees.  The outrigger has a 42’ 10” overall frame length and sets up quickly utilizing the exclusive Schwing patented stable platform.

The pump specifications are as impressive.  It has a concrete output of 213 cubic yards per hour and allows for a maximum aggregate size of 2.5”.   The 58 meter pump even has the option of a detachable boom that can be mounted hundreds of feet from the pump.

Shotcrete is the method of applying concrete pneumatically through a high pressure nozzle.  It can save both time and money over typical cast-in-place concrete since Shotcrete walls are constructed faster as they need less forming and use less material.  Without tie holes (that need to be filled, leaving visible blemishes), it can be an aesthetically appealing alternative.

An exciting new field is developing that takes shotcrete to the next level.  Talented shotcrete craftsmen are using sculpted shotcrete as a canvas to create artistic walls that have all of the same structural integrity of a standard shotcrete wall.

The application of sculpted shotcrete is only limited by the imagination. It is a great way to either highlight a structure or blend it into the local landscape with its ability to easily apply color, stains, and textures.  Great looking projects are being done with shotcrete that is stained and textured to naturalize an area or to turn plain walls into beautiful murals.

Retaining walls are a great example of where shotcrete’s adaptability and wide range of finished surfaces are designing architectural solutions for stabilizing areas.  Rock sculpting and texturing is used to take a functional project and turn it into something that is very artistic and attractive.

When the City of Burien, WA, which sits below the Cascade Mountain range, needed to build a parking garage, they didn’t want a structure made up of stark concrete walls.  Their goal was to turn the building into a piece of art that highlighted the city’s most visible landmark, Mount Rainier, and the surrounding mountain ranges.  Conco worked to create sculpted shotcrete murals that depicted views of the Cascades, Olympics, and Mount Rainier on all four sides of the building.

After breaking ground in April 2012, San Francisco will have a new football stadium for the 49ers that will open in time for the 2014 NFL season.  The Levi Stadium is being built in Santa Clara, CA, which is located 38 miles from San Francisco.  It will feature wide-open plazas, commercial space, a 49ers team store, and a 49ers Hall of Fame.  The design of the stadium is intended to serve a range of entertainment and sporting events beyond football.

Here are some interesting statistics comparing the old football stadium to the new one.  Candlestick Park was built in 1960 for a cost of $32 million.  The new Levi 49ers Stadium will open in 2014 and will cost $1.2 billion.  While the total seating capacity at the new stadium (68,500 Levi – Candlestick Park 69,900) will be lower, Levi Park will have 9,000 premium club seats and 165 luxury suites.

San Francisco 49ers Stadium Rendering

The new stadium is nearly a 100,000 sq. ft. larger and will feature a scoreboard that is almost 13 times bigger than the one at Candlestick.  Parking should be easier with an addition of more than 3,000 spaces.  Freeway access entry/exit points at the new stadium increase from 4 to 11 and should help fans coming into and out of the game.

Even the interior mode of transportation is improved by increasing elevators to 17 from the 3 in the old park and providing 24 more escalators for a total of 30.  Additionally, there will be an increase in restroom fixtures from 885 to 1135 in the Levi Stadium.

The extensive concrete work done was by Conco.  Upon completion, it will total approximately 60,000 cubic yards of concrete.
