When Graniterock was doing foundation work at the Norman Y. Mineta San Jose International Airport, it encountered an existing 12” storm drain that would need to be addressed. The culvert ran through the proposed site of the next phase of terminal development, and initial thoughts were to use traditional methods of excavation and demolition.

After further analysis, the Graniterock team decided to leave in place and instead fill the storm drain with Conco’s ConFoam™ product. The reason for the change was:

Close proximity to an active runway. Excavation and demolition would have been disruptive to airport operations. ConFoam™ allowed for the work to be performed without the need to bring out equipment that might impact airport activity.
Ease of removal of material if needed. The area of the storm drain is marked for future development and would most likely need to be dug up at a later date. ConFoam™ is easily excavatable.
100% compaction. ConFoam™ can be pumped long distances (over 2000 feet) and achieve 100% compaction, filling all voids and eliminating the potential for subgrade failure in the future.
Time to complete the task. The process to complete the task took less than 4 hours from the time the equipment arrived on site until the time the clean-up was completed, which reduced any disruption and saved time on an already tight schedule.
Cost to complete the task. Very little equipment or labor was required using ConFoam™, saving Graniterock money on the project.

Southport Update February 2019 - The Conco Companies

The Conco Companies, providing a range of concrete services, has poured out the three, 9-story LEED Silver mixed-use buildings at the Southport on Lake Washington Office Campus located in Renton, Washington. The Southport on Lake Washington is a major project for Renton, covering 17.1 acres of waterfront property, and will include 712,752 Sq. Ft. of Class “A” office space with a total project cost of $590 million.

Designed from the beginning to support the demanding needs of leading tech companies, the energy-efficient property supports high-burst networking speeds and heavy data transfer requirements. Southport’s beautiful office space boasts large, efficient floor plans that range from 18,000 to 36,900 rentable Sq. Ft. with 12’ 4” ceiling and feature 9’ window heights.

The offices are paired with a parking garage, a 4-star hotel and adjacent previously existing apartments. The parking garage includes 695,159 gross Sq. Ft. of parking space with 2,121 structured parking spaces and the ability to expand parking to an adjacent site to meet tenants’ needs. The open 12-story, $180 million, 347-room 4-star Hyatt Regency Lake Washington at Seattle’s Southport provides premium accommodations for business travelers to Southport.

This project has been a monumental achievement for the Conco Northwest Division. Under the direction of Conco’s Project Superintendent Gerrit Johnson, and Project Manager Alex Gateman, the structural duration of the project lasted over 2.5 years. Southport sets the high-water mark for the longest–and largest– contract the Conco Northwest Division has completed.

Over 2.5 years, Conco NW has:

Placed 77,400 Cu. Yds. of concrete (readymix supplied by Stoneway)
Shipped and placed 13,700,00 lbs. of rebar (installed by RPM)
Shipped and placed 1,450,000 lbs of post-tension cables (installed by RPM) – that’s more than 450 miles of cable.

Project Rendering from Hudson Pacific Properties

The Conco Companies is providing a variety of concrete services for the new 13 story Epic Tower in Hollywood on Sunset Blvd. The project is being developed by owner Hudson Pacific Properties and was designed by Gensler architects, who also recently collaborated on the nearby ICON tower. The general contractor is Hathaway Dinwiddie Construction Company and the structural engineer is Nabih-Yousef and Associates.

The project is a 280,000 Sq. Ft. office tower with 18,400 Sq. Ft of new retail space. The building also includes 27,000 Sq. Ft. of inspiring landscaped terraces, providing a seamless transition to outside workspaces through tall glass walls that overlook the city of Los Angeles. The project is targeting a LEED Gold certification, incorporating bike-parking, a fitness center as well as a ‘landing pad’ for drones.

Conco was selected for this project because of our experience and commitment to high quality planning and execution on complex projects. With Conco’s expertise, the Epic Tower will be the first building in Los Angeles to feature 15 foot, low-profile concrete ceilings. Conco began work on the high-profile project in December of 2017 and completion is anticipated for March 2019. This timeline reflects the challenges of working in a growing neighborhood with high-traffic volume limiting site access and work hours. Conco is providing concrete finishing, concrete pumping, concrete formwork, and shotcrete services for the Epic Tower.

Once completed the Epic Tower will provide additional parking, retail and high-end office space to the neighborhood. The innovative tiered design of the Epic Tower is expected to draw more leading creative companies to Hollywood’s central district and its vibrant community.

LA Memorial Coliseum Renovation - The Conco Companies

Project rendering from DLR GroupThe Conco Companies is providing a range of concrete services for the renovation of the historic Memorial Coliseum in Los Angeles. As a host venue for the University of Southern California (USC) Trojans football team, two Olympics, two Super Bowls, and a World Series, this iconic stadium is undergoing the largest renovation in its 95 year history to prepare for the 2028 Olympic games in Los Angeles. The 270 million dollar upgrade includes an eight-story modern structure with press boxes and luxury suites as well as new lighting, updated audio, WiFi and video scoreboards.

Along with the renovations, USC, which manages the stadium on lease from the city and county of Los Angeles, announced a 16 year naming rights deal with United Airlines. The stadium’s name will change to United Airlines Memorial Stadium when the renovations finish in August 2019 . “Together with United, we can ensure the Coliseum’s future as a world-class venue and true community asset,” said USC President C. L. Max Nikias at the groundbreaking ceremony.

The project is being developed by the DLR Group with architect David Sakaguchi and general contractors Hathaway-Dinwiddie and Hunt-AECOM. Conco, selected for this project because of their previous stadium experience and working relationship with Hathaway-Dinwiddie and Hunt-AECOM, is providing concrete finishing, concrete pumping, concrete formwork, construction trucking and shotcrete services.

The LA Coliseum is a high-profile project that includes a number of unique challenges requiring Conco’s experience in planning and executing complex projects. This included the difficult task of staging the construction in such a fashion as to not impede the 2018 and 2019 football seasons of both the USC Trojans and LA Rams. The Conco Companies is providing a full range of concrete services on the Milpitas 750 Project, a 7-level parking garage in Milpitas, CA. The project is being developed by the owner, the Anton Development Company and designed by the firm of Architects Orange. The general contractor is Anton Building Company, Inc. and Seneca Engineers is serving as the structural engineer. The parking garage totals 189,475 sq. ft. and will accommodate 508 parking stalls along with 130 spots for bicycles. This project is located at the corner of E. Capitol Ave and Montague Expressway.

Conco’s responsibilities on the project include providing concrete pumping, reinforcement, formwork, finishing, and shotcrete services. During the course of the project, we expect to place 10,300 cubic yards of concrete as well as shotcrete. In addition we are providing 1,600,000 pounds of rebar and post tension reinforcement. Our crews started work in September of 2017 and we will complete the project in August of 2018.

The parking garage is one of two parking structures that will service an 82-unit, market rate apartment complex. The entire project includes 5,000 square feet of ground level retail space and extends from 730 to 750 E. Capitol Ave.
